      Paróquia de São João Batista de São João do Manhuaçu, Minas Gerais. A região onde hoje se encontra nossa Paróquia e Município de São João do Manhuaçu/MG, por muito tempo funcionou como uma grande muralha de densas matas para evitar o acesso dos mineiros (principalmente da região aurífera, Ouro Preto e região) à Província do Espírito Santo (especificamente Vitória). Nossa região era habitada por indígenas botocudos (Aimorés). E espalhava-se a fama de que esses indígenas eram ferozes. Por isso dificilmente alguém conseguia atravessar tal região. A Província do Espírito Santo era uma defesa natural para proteger o ouro. O governo português temia o descaminho do metal precioso. Havia o risco de o ouro sair de Minas e ser enviado para a Europa, via Espírito Santo, sem o recolhimento dos impostos; temia-se também que potências europeias invadissem o Brasil pelo Espírito Santo para tomar as minas de ouro. Em 1808 a Família Real chega ao Rio de Janeiro e Dom João VI baixa um decreto mandando abrir uma estrada em linha reta ligando Vitória à Vila Rica de Ouro Preto. Estrada que iria passar justamente em nosso hoje município de São João, passando por Manhumirim (Pirapetinga - que já em 1865 era um pequeno núcleo desbravador e em 1877 se torna Distrito), Luizburgo, Pontões, indo em direção a Santa Margarida, Matipó, Ponte Nova até Ouro Preto. O governador da Capitania do Espírito Santo, Francisco Alberto Rubim (ESTRADA DO RUBIM) escreve ao Rei em 03.12.1819 que a estrada estava pronta. Assim diz Rubim: “Tem esta estrada e foi feita de machado e foice, cortando matas e montanhas da cachoeira de Santa Maria à Vila Rica e até Souzel se levantaram pela dificuldade que havia de levar mantimentos além deste ponto por falta de animais e pastos”. Tudo nos leva a crer que em nosso Município existiu um quartel (quartel novo ou quartel do Manhuaçu). Parece que esta Estrada já estava pronta desde 1814. Sabemos que Santa Margarida em 1859 tornou-se Distrito de Paz e vai se tornar Paróquia em 1866. Os Padres de Santa Margarida sempre atenderam São João do Manhuaçu. A freguesia de Manhuaçu foi criada em 1875 e instituída em 1878, enquanto o município foi criado em 05.11.1877. Sua sede inicialmente foi em São Simão (hoje Simonésia) e transferida para a Vila de São Lourenço em1881. A povoação de São João iniciou as margens da Estrada do Rubim. Uma enorme quantidade de terras foram doadas (praticamente todo o lugar onde hoje se acha a nossa Cidade) por ancestrais da família de Horácio Adão, ao Santo (pois eram devotos de São João Batista) para que aqui se construísse a Igrejinha (Capela) de São João e formasse o PATRIMÔNIO de São João. E em 12.01.1886, São João se torna Distrito Policial, com suas divisas demarcadas e em 22.05.1890 (Decreto nº. 78), São João se torna Distrito de Paz. A Paróquia de Santa Margarida deu assistência a São João até 1999, quando São João se tornou Paróquia. Publicado no Boletim Informativo ‘O Profeta João de Junho/2009.
